The Women’s Microfinance Initiative

Community Center and Permanent Location for
Bulambuli Village, Buyobo Sub-County,
Sironko District of Uganda
Africa

This building is located in an eastern Ugandan village. Its construction has been funded by the Women’s Microfinance Initiative, an American based non-profit organization dedicated to providing small loans to women to start their own small businesses. The building is not air-conditioned, and the design employs strategies often used in tropical architecture to mitigate the effects of the hot, humid climate: building orientation, large over-hangs, maximizing cross-ventilation and venting the roof and the attic space. Designed on a minimal budget, the building was detailed to take advantage of locally available construction materials and methods.
